ALBANY, N.Y. – The Castleton University men's basketball team closed out the 2018 portion of its schedule with a non-conference loss on Sunday afternoon, falling to Sage by a final score of 62-53 in Albany, N.Y.
The Spartans (3-8) outshot the Gators (4-6), 37.5 percent (21-of-56) to 33.3 percent (22-of-66), but Sage added six three-pointers to Castleton's two in the contest. The Spartans were 9-for-12 at the free-throw line, while the Gators posted a 12-of-19 mark at the charity stripe. Both teams were plagued by turnovers in the contest, though Sage cashed in on 18 points of turnovers to Castleton's 12.
Tank Roberson led the Spartans with 14 points while adding four assists, and Casey Belade chipped in with nine points and a team-leading six rebounds. Calvin Carter shot 4-of-8 from the field for eight total points and Richard Walker posted eight points and five rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.
Isaiah Scurry led all scorers with 16 points for Sage on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, while Chris Kidd joined him in double digits with 12 points—five of which came at the free-throw line. Joshua Gonzalez led all players with seven rebounds for the Gators, while Kidd added six boards for the home side.
After heading into the break down eight points, Castleton opened the second half on a 10-2 run to level the game at 36-36 after Belade tipped home an offensive board to level the game with 15 minutes to play. The Gators took the lead less than a minute later, an advantage they held onto until the final buzzer as Castleton could not keep pace.
The Spartans open play in the New Year on Saturday, January 5, with a 5 p.m. matchup against Western Connecticut at Glenbrook Gym.
