Men’s Hockey Takes Down #15 Curry in Overtime; Maunula Scores Golden Goal and Earns All-Tournament Team Selection

RUTLAND, Vt. – Sophomore Alex Maunula scored one minute into overtime to lift the Castleton University men's hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory against nationally 15th-ranked Curry College in the Castleton Invitational consolation contest at Spartan Arena on Saturday.

Maunula grabbed a long-lead pass from Jahwara Rennalls and ripped a wrist shot over the goalie's shoulder after dodging a defender.

The Spartans trailed late and tied it at two with 4:21 left in regulation. Troy Taylor pinched on the right point to keep in a puck on the wall. Then, Glenn Wiswell collected it and delivered a pass to the forehand of Kyle Kazeroid, streaking to the back-door for the put-away.

The Colonels tallied the first goal of the game 7:25 into the opening period on a marker by Nicholas Favaro, assisted by Alex Ochterbeck and Viktor Jansson. Favaro was later named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Spartans tied the game with 8:14 remaining in the second frame. Sophomore Sam Rennert fired in a shot from the left-wing circle, which was set up by helpers from classmate Jason Bilski and senior Jacob Erwin. Just over a minute later, Curry regained the advantage on a shorthanded score from sophomore Mic Curran on a breakaway opportunity and beat Castleton junior goaltender Luke Cohen glove-side for the 2-1 advantage.

Cohen was solid in his first start of the year, finishing with 31 saves to earn the victory. He was responsible for halting the Colonel attack on several occasions to keep the Sprtans to within one goal down the stretch.

Curry held a 33-25 edge in shots. Both teams were empty on the power-play as the Colonels were 0-for-1 and Castleton was 0-for-6.

Later, Fredonia defeated Nazareth in the title game in double overtime. Victory Tracy scored the goal with 52.8 seconds left in the 3-on-3 period. The game is officially recorded as a 5-5 tie.

Castleton returns to action on Friday, Dec. 6 on the road at intrastate rival and nationally top-ranked Norwich at 7 p.m.
