CASTLETON, Vt. – After a nine-day break caused in part by inclement weather that postponed two games, the Castleton University men's lacrosse team returns to action Friday, March 17, against Mount Ida College starting at 6 p.m. at Alumni Field in Newton, Mass.
The Spartans bring a 1-2 overall record into Friday's game, last facing nationally ranked St. Lawrence in Plattsburgh, N.Y. on March 8 and suffering an 18-3 loss to the Saints. Castleton was scheduled to host Southern Maine and SUNY Potsdam before making the trip to Mount Ida, but cold temperatures and a significant snowstorm forced those contests to be rescheduled.
Through three games, Jason Sedell leads the team with five goals, followed by Isaac Devoid with four goals. Louis Alhage has the most assists (six) and points (eight) so far this season for the Spartans, followed by Tom Pardew with three goals and three assists for six total points.
Defensively, Peyton Faasse paces Castleton with 15 ground balls and is tied with Edward Doton for the team lead in caused turnovers with five apiece. Brandon Myron has played all but two minutes in net for the Spartans and is currently second in the North Atlantic Conference with 37 total saves.
Mount Ida is off to its best start in program history at 4-0 with home victories over Becker and Salve Regina and road wins at New England College and Gordon. The Mustangs have not played a game since defeating Gordon 15-11 on March 10, as their match at Salem State was postponed until March 23.
As a team, the Mustangs are averaging 14.5 goals per game while allowing just eight goals per match. Jon Berry leads the team with 11 goals, followed by Peter Hardy and Kyle Ton with nine goals apiece. Chad Coehlo has collected seven goals and 12 assists for 19 total points, leading Mount Ida in both assists and points.
Alex Zito has won almost 70 percent (67-for-96) of the faceoffs he has taken and collected a team-high 35 ground balls, while Alex Veloukas leads the Mustangs with nine caused turnovers. In net, Cam Hayward has played in all but seven-and-a-half minutes in net for Mount Ida, posting a 7.74 goals against average and a .625 save percentage.
This will be the 17th meeting all-time between Castleton and Mount Ida, with the Mustangs holding a 12-4 series advantage. While Mount Ida was a member of the NAC, the Mustangs won six straight league titles from 2004 to 2009 before Castleton defeated Mount Ida in the 2010 league championship match.
Last season, the two teams played for the first time in six years, with the Spartans defeating the Mustangs 15-13 at Spartan Stadium March 19, 2016. Pardew earned a hat trick for Castleton while Alhage collected two goals and six assists. Berry led Mount Ida with six goals and two assists, and Coehlo finished with four assists for the Mustangs.
Castleton's next home match against Plymouth State has been moved from Sunday, March 19, to Tuesday, March 21, with a 4 p.m. start time at Spartan Stadium.
