LATHAM, N.Y. – Dropping just one pairing throughout, the Castleton University men's tennis team defeated the host Sage College Gators 8-1 in a nonconference match on Friday afternoon at the Tri-City Fitness Club.
Castleton has won two straight matches to improve to 7-4 overall, while Sage has yet to pick up a win in 2018, falling to 0-7.
The Spartans looked fully in sync for the second straight match as they immediately claimed a 3-0 lead with dominant doubles' performances. Ryan Mulder – in his second match of the season – joined Quentin Barthe at first doubles to claim an 8-3 win.
Mulder would go on to drop just three games in his third singles pairing earning a 6-1 and 6-2 victory. His doubles' partner Barthe surrendered only two games, as his opponent was able to mount a respectable second set following a 6-0 loss in the opener.
Trevor Hanna and Brody Wagner moved to 8-0 on the season with another comprehensive win at second doubles. During singles play, Hanna earned three breaks in each set to clinch a 6-0 and 6-0 score. Meanwhile, Wagner dropped a single game at fifth singles in the second set.
Oskar Eriksson earned his first win of the year with a straight-set – 6-0 and 6-3 – win in the sixth flight. The freshman proved strong in the latter set as his opponent offered a strong fight.
Castleton will wrap up the regular season at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday as it travels to face defending league champion Colby-Sawyer College.
