Men's Tennis Makes It Two Straight With Nailbiter Against MCLA

RUTLAND, Vt. -- Continuing his hot start to the season, the reigning Little East Player of the Week Igor Almeida picked up two more wins as the Castleton University men's tennis team defeated the MCLA Trailblazers 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.

Castleton earned its second consecutive victory as it improved to 2-2 overall, while MCLA drops to 1-2.

Almeida joined partner Nate Hinson to get the match started in the right direction as the duo thumped the Trailblazers' pair in the first flight of doubles by a score of 8-1. Following at the second flight, Levi Williams - reigning Rookie of the Week - and his partner Tripp Norris scored the Spartans second point of the match with an 8-2 decision.

In singles play, Almeida surrendered just two games as he rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win. At the third and fifth levels of singles play, Levi Williams and Spencer Butter earned straight-set victories. Williams rolled 6-1, 6-1 while Butter was forced to battle but knocked off his opponent 6-3, 6-4.

Men's tennis returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the Spartans face Northern Vermont University-Johnson in nonconference play.
