RUTLAND, Vt. -- Earning his 13th and 14th wins of the season, Igor Almeida scored two more wins as the Castleton University men's tennis team concluded its season with a Little East Conference loss against Bridgewater State - 6-3 - on Saturday afternoon at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.
Castleton finishes its season at 2-11 overall and 0-7 in its first season as part of the Little East. Bridgewater State earns the sixth seed in the conference tournament, picking up its second win of the year in league play. The Bears are headed to Rhode Island College for the first round of the LEC Tournament.
Joining Jared Wheeler in doubles, Almeida earned his sixth win at the top flight of doubles during the campaign and fourth with the former as his partner. Forced to battle, Almeida and Wheeler held steady with the Bears' top squad until 7-7 before earning the break-of-serve to eventually earn the 9-7 victory.
Trailing 2-1 heading into singles play, Almeida raced to his 14th overall win of the year and his ninth singles victory, finishing at 4-1 against Little East competition. The junior rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory, facing little resistance.
Castleton's other point, came in the form of Jacob Peet at the sixth flight of singles. Battling to a first-set tiebreak, Peet held off the opponent 7-5 in the breaker to grab the set 7-6. After dropping the second, 6-2, he bounced back to earn a late break and win the third set 7-5.
The Spartans lose just one player to graduation as they return for their second season in the Little East in 2020.
