Softball Beats Cedar Crest, Falls to No. 17 Coe and East. Mennonite

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Castleton softball team defeated Cedar Crest College, 16-2, sandwiched between losses to Eastern Mennonite University, 3-2, and nationally-ranked Coe College, 13-2, on Saturday.

Calli Van Gorden led Castleton hitters by going 5-for-8 on the day with three doubles and three RBIs. Kylie Wright was 3-for-6 with a triple, double, and four RBIs. She also pitched six innings, surrendering two runs, none earned, on seven hits across two appearances. Miranda Fish was 5-for-10 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Castleton will play three games on Sunday, one each versus Penn. St.-Schuylkill, Hilbert, and Wentworth, beginning at 11:30 a.m.  

Eastern Mennonite 3, Castleton 2

Eastern Mennonite scored all three runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the come-from-behind victory. Cassidy Chrisman hit a pinch-hit single to center to score Casey Coleman from third on a close play at the plate to get EMU on the board. 

Then, pinch runner Alyssa Gonzales came around to score on an overthrow of second base when Taylor Hensley stole second. Hensley scored on an RBI groundout by Beck Hoskins to complete the scoring. 

Castleton snagged a 1-0 lead in the first when Van Gorden hit an RBI double to deep right-center field. The Spartans went up 2-0 in the fourth on a Wright pinch-hit single over the shortstop's head. 

Emily Harvey started for Castleton and allowed one hit through two innings of shutout ball. Olivia Bowen took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits over three innings. Wright pitched a scoreless sixth inning after allowing the first two hitters to single. 

Kelsi Martin surrendered one hit and one walk over two and 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win. She struck out four and walked one.   

Castleton 16, Cedar Crest 2 (5 innings)

Eight Castleton starters registered at least one hit to lead the team to the run-rule victory. Devin Millerick went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, while Katelynn LaPan, MaKenna Thorne, Fish, Kayla Fac, and Wright all finished with two-hit games. 

Castleton scored nine times in the first inning highlighted by a two-run double by Wright to the right-center field gap. Tori Swaine and Fac both hit two-run singles in the inning, while Thorne also pitched in an RBI single.

The Spartans plated two more in the second inning on Wright's triple and an RBI single by Millerick before they put up five in the fourth inning.      

Coe 13, Castleton 2 (5 innings)

Haley Jones went 2-for-3 with an inside the park home run, triple, and two RBIs to lead Coe over the Spartans for the Kowhawks' third run-rule victory of the day.

The nationally 17th-ranked Coe team scored eight runs on five hits in the opening frame to jump out to the commanding lead. Allie O'Brien launched a home run in the second inning to extend the advantage to nine.  

Harvey lasted 2/3 of an inning after surrendering six runs, five earned, on three hits. Machaila Arjavich yielded 10 hits and seven runs, six earned, over 2 1/3 innings worked. Bowen tossed a perfect fourth inning.  

The Spartans got on the board in the third on a Van Gorden double just shy of the center field fence. She also knocked in a run in the fifth on a single to right field.
