Women's Ice Hockey Falls To Morrisville In Season Opener

RUTLAND, Vt. – A high-powered Morrisville State offense led the visiting Mustangs past the Castleton University women's ice hockey team – 6-1 – on Friday evening at Spartan Arena.

Falling in its season opener, Castleton is now 0-1-0, while Morrisville improves to 1-0-0.

The Spartans started off the action as the more aggressive team, working the puck into the Mustangs zone and pelting the opposing goalie with shots. Yet, Morrisville turned the tides at the end of the first period with two quick scores.

On a powerplay opportunity in the 19th minute of play, Maddison Devlin was on the receiving end of a redirect on the doorstep. Poking the puck on the goalie's right side, Devlin notched her first of three scores.

Moments later, Devlin put the Mustangs up 2-0 as she laced the rebound in the same fashion as her first score. Kate Powell put the original attempt on goal.

Trailing 3-0 past the midpoint of the second period, Ali Stevens picked up right where she left off after earning NEHC Rookie of the Year honors in 2017-18. On a one-on-one chance after stealing the puck, Stevens beat the goalie on her right.

Despite temporarily stunting the Morrisville State momentum, it would pick up steam again and add three more scores before all was said and done. After Devlin picked up her third goal with the third score of the contest, Tessa Dobson and Jessica Ujcik (2) each tallied goals.

While unable to get more than one score, the Spartan offense continued to turn and put shots on goal. They would tally 20 total shots.

In goal, Castleton's Alexis Kalm would take the loss, while making 30 saves on 36 shots. Morrisville's Karoline Arvik earned the victory, stopping 19 shots.

Castleton and Morrisville will match up again at 2 p.m. on Saturday as the Spartans look to bounce back from the opening-day loss.
