RUTLAND, Vt. -- The Castleton University women's ice hockey team took the ice Friday evening as it opened the 2019-20 season against Oswego State. The Lakers jumped out to an early first period lead and never looked back, downing the Spartans, 5-2.
The Spartans (0-1-0) found themselves in an early hole as Emma Moriseette found the back of the net off an Eryn Stewart pass at the 2:43 mark of the first period. The Lakers (1-0-0) doubled the lead four minutes later when Philomena Teggart scored on goaltender Alexis Kalm after a scuffle in front of net.
The Lakers would add one more goal late in the first period to solidify a commanding lead heading into the first intermission.
The second period began and the Lakers began to add to their lead. Darby Palisi was sent off as she was penalized for hooking at the 5:43 mark of the period and the Lakers capitalized. Philomena Teggart scored on the power play to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. Kalm exited the game in the second period and Katlyn Hathaway took over in goal.
The Spartans finally got on the board in the second period as Maeghan Vasile scored the Spartans' first goal of the season. Vasile scored her sixth career goal to give the Spartans a little bit of a boost.
The Lakers however, would answer late in the second period to hold a 5-1 heading into the third period.
The Spartans scored their second goal of the game as Courtney Gauthier scored on a breakaway and beat goaltender Rachael Farmer for the shorthanded goal. Gauthier tallied 22 points last season and with her one point in tonight's contest, she continues to lead all returning players in career points with 36.
Women's ice hockey will once again match up with Oswego State at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 2 as the Spartans look to bounce back from the opening-day loss.
