Spartans Stellar on Senior Day

Castleton, Vt. - The Spartans sent off their seniors in style, downing Husson 16-4 in their final regular season home game. Castleton honored their graduating seniors in pre-game ceremonies. The Spartans' graduating class finishes their college career with a perfect 18-0 mark against North Atlantic Conference opponents in the regular season.

Maddy DaCosta scored three goals and tallied an assist while Kate Auer registered two goals and two assists to lead the Spartan offense. The Castleton offensive was a well-spread effort as 11 different Spartans found the net. 

Mariah Carrier led the Husson offense, coming off the bench to score twice. She also scooped three ground balls and earned a draw control. Hayley Thibeau and Michaela Bicknell each scored for the Eagles as well. 

The Spartans owned the first half, outscoring the Eagles 11-1. Castleton began the game on a 9-0 run, holding the visitors scoreless for the first 28 minutes of play. DaCosta opened the game's scoring with a goal from Blake Wardwell, followed by a score from Wardwell three minutes later. Auer and Kim Gosselin each scored a pair during the Spartans' run, and senior Sarah Clark capped the 9-0 start, burying a free position shot with 1:53 remaining in the half.

Husson got on the board late in the first with a goal from Mariah Carrier. The freshman midfielder came off the bench to make an immediate impact, beating a Castleton defender to score unassisted, making it 9-1. Castleton followed with two goals in the final 90 seconds of the half to make it 11-1 at the break.

In the second half, Spartan senior Taryn Smith opened the scoring with her sixth goal of the season. DaCosta found Smith on a cut to goal that translated into the senior burying  a snap shot into the net. Husson answered with a pair of goals from Carrier and Hayley Thibeau to make it 12-3 with 22:50 left. 

Castleton outscored the Eagles 4-1 the rest of the way, with Jennilee Mark, DaCosta, Chantel Wilkin, and Jenna Bostwick each grabbing a goal in the final 20 minutes if play. Michaela Bicknell scored off of a free position shot with 13:20 left to mark the Eagles' third second-half tally. Castleton possessed the ball for the final few minutes of play to earn the 16-4 win.

Sarah Clark led the Spartan defense with a well-rounded effort, grabbing three draw controls, earning three ground ball and three caused turnovers. Jennilee Mark also registered three caused turnovers for the Spartans, and Blake Wardwell and Mariah Lesure each finished with three ground balls as well. In net, Rachel Bombardier earned the win, allowing one goal and making four saves in the first half. Meghan Els stopped 10 shots in the second half to maintain the Spartan lead. 

Michaela Bicknell earned a game-high five draw controls and scooped four ground balls for the Eagles. Kayleigh Piccirillo also scooped three ground balls and earned three caused turnovers to lead Husson on the defensive end. Kaitlin Dolloff made 11 saves in net, but took the loss after allowing 16 goals. 

The Spartans improve to 7-6 on the season with a 6-0 mark in the NAC. The squad will enter the NAC playoffs as the top seed, earning the right to host all the way through the playoffs. The road to the championship will have to travel through Spartan Stadium.
