CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans captured their ninth consecutive victory this evening with a 13-1 decision over the Green Mountain College Eagles at Spartan Stadium in the "You Can Play" game.
The hosts outshot the opposition 23-7 and held the advantage in draw controls 12-4 while also forcing 14 turnovers. With the win, Castleton improves to 10-2 on the season and remains perfect in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) at 5-0, whereas Green Mountain drops to 1-8 (0-6 NAC) overall.
Emily Cross turned in an impressive performance with four points from two goals and two assists, while Hannah Braman, Hannah Hobbs and Brianna MacKay added two goals apiece in the winning effort. Maegan Laymon, meanwhile, scored the lone Eagle goal to go along with two groundballs.
The Spartan attack got off to a quick start in the contest with five goals in the initial 6:20 of play. Kate Auer opened the scoring 1:33 into the first frame followed by scores from Brandi Whittemore, Maddy DaCosta and MacKay. At the 23:40 mark, Ashley Pelkey fed the ball to Emilee Maher, and the junior defender slotted home a shot to record her first career goal and push the hosts' lead to five.
Castleton continued to create scoring opportunities, and with 17:01 remaining in the first, Braman found the back of the cage before Cross added a score of her own just over two minutes later to give the hosts' a seven-goal advantage.
Green Mountain grabbed its lone goal of the contest at the 7:50 mark in the first after Laymon finished a shot top shelf to head into the break with a 7-1 deficit.
The Spartans wasted little time to get on the scoring sheet in the second half, as Pelkey notched her first career goal less than three minutes into the frame. Just over a minute later, Hobbs scored her first goal of the game, and Cross followed by converting a free-position attempt to make it 10-1 in favor of the hosts.
MacKay tallied her second score of the contest with 21:28 remaining in the game, and Hobbs and Braman tacked on two more scores in the final 17 minutes of play to secure a 13-1 victory for Castleton.
Rachel Bombardier improved to 4-0 on the season after making four saves on five shots. Casie Sharp, meanwhile, dropped to 1-8 on the season after her and Katie Legnard combined to produce six saves in the losing effort.
The Spartans head to Maine this weekend, as they face the Maine Maritime Mariners on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm in conference play.
