CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University wrestling team heads to Oneonta, N.Y., Saturday, Dec. 9, to compete in the Northeast Duals for the second consecutive year.
The Spartans will face the host SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons at 12 noon, followed by contests against SUNY Cortland, ranked 16th nationally by the NWCA, at 2 p.m. and Niagara County Community College at 4 p.m.
Castleton is coming off a dominating 45-4 victory over New England College in the Spartans' home opener Wednesday night, winning nine of 10 matches to improve its dual match record to 4-3.
Seven Spartans have already reached the 10-win mark for the season, led by Max Tempel at 149 pounds with 17 victories. Jesse Webb has won eight straight matches at 285 pounds to improve to 14-3, including bracket titles at the Ithaca Invitational and the Ted Reese Invitational, while Nick Camacho is now 13-5 after his major decision victory Wednesday.
SUNY Oneonta is 4-0 in dual matches this season, winning all four contests at the Electric City Duals in Scranton, Pa., on Nov. 11. The Red Dragons are coming off a third place finish at the RIT Invitational last Saturday. Kevin Knox led his team last weekend by winning the 133-pound bracket with five straight victories.
SUNY Cortland is 3-0 in dual matches heading into Saturday's competition, winning all three contests at the New York/Pennsylvania Duals in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Nov. 11. J.P. Puca is 11-1 at 174 pounds, while Greg Chery is 11-4 with five pins at 157 pounds and Josh Antoine is 10-3 with six pins at 125 pounds.
Niagara County Community College brings a 3-1 dual meet record into the weekend after victories over Jamestown CC and Spartanburg Methodist last Friday at the Niagara Duals. Last Saturday at the Thunderwolves Open, Troy Keller won the 165-pound bracket, while Matt Genau finished second in the 125-pound competition.
Last year, Castleton faced the same three schools in the same order at the Northeast Duals, losing to SUNY Oneonta (28-11) and to SUNY Cortland (33-13) before defeating Niagara County CC (28-16).
Castleton will host Southern Maine next Saturday, Dec. 16, at Glenbrook Gym starting at 2:30 p.m. before enjoying the winter break.
