CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's soccer team opened its Little East Conference (LEC) slate with a 3-0 victory over Keene State at home on Saturday.
Taylor Mann and Makenzi Bellando each had a goal and an assist as three different goal-scorers provided the offense for the Spartans and junior goalkeeper Loren Henderson made four saves to pick up her second shutout of the season.
Junior Rylee Nichols rounded out the scoring for Castleton (4-2-0, 1-0-0 LEC), with her conference-leading sixth goal of the campaign.
Bellando struck first at the 24:07 mark on a right-footed volley from eight yards. After a Spartan throw-in near the right-side end-line. Mann found Dallas Brodhead, who delivered the cross to the foot of Bellando for the score.
Castleton made it a two-goal advantage 2:35 into the second half on Nichols' goal, which stretched her goal-scoring streak to five straight games. Julia Carone added her third assist of the season on the long-distance strike from Nichols.
Then, a Spartan insurance tally by Mann at the 79:29 mark completed the scoring. Bellando forced a turnover at midfield and after splitting a pair of Owl defenders, she led Mann with a pass. Mann lifted a cross-corner strike over the Keene State goalkeeper, Shelby Offord, and just under the bar.
Offord made four saves in the effort and Amanda Marshall registered five shots for Keene State (2-2-0, 0-1-0 LEC).
Keene State out-shot Castleton, 16-13 and produced a narrow 3-2 margin in corner kicks.
Castleton returns to action on the road at UMass Boston on Saturday, September 21.
