CASTLETON Vt. – The Castleton University women's soccer team was defeated by Springfield College, 6-1 in non-conference action on Tuesday.
Sara Swetland scored three goals for the Pride in a span of 9:48 in the first half to swing the game in Springfield's favor. Julia Carone scored her fourth goal of the season in the fourth minute to knot the game at one.
Springfield struck first at the 1:24 mark. Adalia Malick collected a pass and eluded a defender before scoring on a left-footed strike for the score.
Carone's lefty hit from 20 yards squared the game at one just 1:47 later. Tatum Shappy picked up the assist on the goal.
Then, Swetland started and finished her hat trick in the first half with three straight goals to give the Pride a 4-1 lead by the 27-minute mark.
Kaleigh Dale and Ashley Macdonald scored in the second half to complete the scoring for Springfield (6-2-1).
Alex Benfatti started in goal for the Spartans and made 13 saves in the effort, as Springfield held a 29-12 shot advantage. Pride keeper Caitlin Normoyle was not forced to make a save but picked up the win. Bridget O'Connor played the second half for the Pride and made three saves.
Castleton (5-5-0) will return to conference play on Saturday as it will travel to Rhode Island College for a contest slated for 1 p.m.
