Women's Tennis Seeks Another Postseason Berth With Shift To Little East

CASTLETON, Vt. – Returning four athletes from 2017, the Castleton University women's tennis team will kick off the season versus Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Saturday. Castleton is looking to build on its 9-5 record from the past season.

The Spartans are seeking a hot start to a schedule that will feature nine new opponents with a switch to the Little East Conference. Team captain Megan Nadler will return for her junior season after earning All-NAC First Team honors in 2017. The Rutland, Vt. native notched an impressive 13-1 singles record that included a five-match and an eight-match winning streak. Adding to her impressive season accomplishments, Nadler stacked up a 10-4 doubles record.

Joining Nadler as team veterans will be Kirsten Kruk, Alexis Curley and Emily Miller. The trio combined to go 23-13 in singles and 20-11 in doubles play over the course of the season. Yet, much of the team's success in 2018 will hinge on the four new additions – Becca Corsette, Najma Hilo, Megan Hunt and Grace Sharkey – as they make the quick transition between leagues.

Prior to kicking off conference play – part of a slate of five-straight Little East matches – at Western Connecticut State on Sept. 15, the Spartans will take on a few familiar opponents.

Following its season opener against Lyndon – a program the Spartans have owned as of late, posting five wins in a row by a combined score of 44-1 – Castleton travels to Plattsburgh. The Cardinals have won the last three head-to-heads and will be a difficult early-season test.

Nonetheless, head coach Rob Purdy knows what it takes to get his team ready for the coming season. The Lyndon State graduate has led the Spartans to a postseason berth in each of his eight years at the helm, which has culminated in a 78-46 (.629) record. Purdy has also been named conference Coach of the Year three times.

Breaking up the conference schedule with Sage on Oct. 4, Castleton completes the regular season with Little East foes Bridgewater State, UMass Boston and UMass-Dartmouth.
