CASTLETON, Vt. – Earning a sweep in the singles portion of the match, Rhode Island College defeated the Castleton University women's tennis team – 8-1 – at the Castleton Courts on Saturday afternoon.
Castleton falls to 2-4 overall following the loss, while it drops to 0-3 in Little East action. Meanwhile, Rhode Island College remains undefeated overall (6-0) and in league play (3-0).
The Spartans looked poised to put up a strong fight against the defending Little East champions, taking the first flight of doubles. Megan Nadler and Kirsten Kruk grabbed an early break and held off Rhode Island College to take the dual 8-5.
After Rhode Island College notched victories at the second and third flights of doubles action, Nadler and Kruk continued to battle in singles.
In the top spot, Nadler forced her RIC opponent to cling to a single break in the opening set before holding two service games in the second. Meanwhile, Kruk pushed the opposition to an opening-set tiebreak. In the breaker, the senior came within two points of snagging the set but was unable to get all the way back.
Women's tennis returns to the courts at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday as it travels to Salem State in search of its first LEC victory.
