CASTLETON, Vt. –The Spartans ran into a tough Southern Vt. squad on Thursday afternoon, falling to the visiting Mountaineers in straight sets at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
Castleton took small leads in each of the first two sets but Southern Vt. quickly took back momentum in each set and finished with the 25-9, 25-10, 25-10 victory. Sophomore Ruth Tomlinson (Huntington, Vt.) played solid defense for the Spartans, finishing with a match-high 11 digs as the team totaled 28 overall. Sophomore Nicole Valastro (So. Glens Falls, N.Y.) was second on the team with five digs and led the Castleton attack with four kills and a .364 hitting percentage.
The Mountaineers hit .425 for the match and were led by the duo of Jessica Alvarez (Eagle Rock, Calif.) and Danielle Healis (San Diego, Calif.) who combined for 22 kills and hit .474 and .529 respectively. Junior Roxy Domines (Los Angeles, Calif.) also played well, finishing with 15 assists, four service aces and six digs.
Castleton drops to 0-16 while Southern Vt. improves to 22-2 on the season. The Spartans return to action on Monday when they travel west into New York state to take on Paul Smith's at 7 p.m.
