COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Castleton University women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference battle at SUNY Cobleskill Thursday evening, falling 3-0 at Iorio Gymnasium.
The Fighting Tigers swept the match 25-20, 25-10, 25-12, to move to 10-9 on the year. Castleton falls to 7-13 on the season after losing their sixth consecutive contest. SUNY Cobleskill racked up 13 aces on the night, while Castleton managed three. The Fighting Tigers had 31 kills as a team to Castleton's 19.
Lizzie Goodrich amassed seven kills, with Madison Hamelink chipping in with four of her own. Hamelink also added 10 digs, just two less than Meghan Zawatsky's team-leading 12 digs. Bre MacDuff had 15 assists and eight digs and Carley Toole led the team with a pair of aces.
Rachel Burke accounted for 16 points for Cobleskill, racking up eight kills with seven solo blocks and an assisted block. Jillian Nitchman and Megan Brewer added six and five kills, respectively, while Mikayla Catherman had a match-high 22 digs.
The first set was a tightly contested battle, with the Fighting Tigers holding off Castleton, 25-20, however Cobleskill cruised through the remaining two sets to close out the sweep, winning 25-10 and 25-12 in the final two frames.
Castleton has a quick turnaround with a Friday night match against Eastern Connecticut State University. The match, slated for 7 p.m. at Glenbrook Gymnasium, will be Castleton's eighth annual Dig Pink contest in support of the Side-Out Foundation.
